1411...!!
This is an alarming figure...!! I came to know about this,in an Aircel ad who collaborated with WWF-India to spread awareness about the dwindling population of the Big-Cats. Mr Jairam Ramesh-our environment minister feels the number is exaggerated , it is feared to be lesser than this.
In the backdrop of wide spread concerns Maharashtra has confirmed they lost 120 tigers in two years. Let us understand why is this concern:
Firstly, Tigers are at the apex of food chain, any threat to them will only spell doom for our eco-system.
Secondly, Its our National Animal, We cannot afford to loose them like this.
Thirdly, Many species of Big cats are ALREADY extinct.
India was once, home to largest number of Tigers and now is a threat to the same species. Let us look at some figure : last year 66 tigers were killed and this year the number already touched 13 in three months.you can always confirm this in www.tigernet.nic.in
What we can do ???
Now this is the million dollar question. A lot can be still done and the good news is the process to save them has already started. Raising awareness is the basic need of the hour. We often see the minsters are given portfolios poles apart to handle together. This should be done away with because they will end up neglecting parts of their job which could be detrimental later. We have to dig down deep to know the unnatural death of tigers. Poachers should be severely punished.
Due to the absence of wildlife tigers are known to visit nearby villages and get killed often by the villagers in fear of loosing their cattle or life. The forest reserves should be handled by efficient men with good compensation packages to reduce the chances of poaching. The decision of the Prime Minister to carve an independent department for wildlife conservation headed by a secretary from Indian forest Services has been lauded by Wildlife Conservationists.
In a poll conducted by Animal Planet , the tiger was voted the world's favourite animal,
Callum Rankine, international species officer at the World Wildlife Federation conservation charity, said the result gave him hope. "If people are voting tigers as their favourite animal, it means they recognise their importance, and hopefully the need , to ensure their survival," he said.
